‘Saturday Night Live’ Takes On College Admissions

Post “Operation Varsity Blues,” nothing is sacred. “Saturday Night Live” took on the college admissions game on March 31, 2019 during their weekly show. Host and actress Sandra Oh, along with regulars Cecily Strong, Kenan Thompson, Heidi Gardner, and Chris Redd portrayed a college admissions board, with a twist.

Didn’t see it on TV? The skit didn’t actually air, as it was cut for time. But through the magic of the Internet, you can watch it here!

The skit systematically hits not only all of the myths and assumptions the general public makes about college admissions, but also layered it with some of the new ones… like photoshopping and paying off coaches for spots.

Our favorite line? “He’s probably got all the stabbing out of his system.” Ouch.

What did they actually get right? Believe it or not, college admissions boards do actually sit around and discuss individual students. However, they don’t compare and contrast them against each other (or piles or money) in this way. They also focus a lot more on their intended major or program, and how their record supports their future success in those courses.

In the end, Sandra Oh served up the justice. While, yes, things are going to change (we’re looking at you, Darmouth), we’re not sure there will be badges involved. But that would be fun. Maybe it’s a new Halloween costume idea for kids?
