Scholarship Mom Tip #9: Win with a Hook

Winning scholarship tips from Smart College Visit’s Scholarship Mom, Monica Matthews. This week: how to start your scholarship essay.

Don’t start your scholarship essay with:
“I need this scholarship money because….”

This is a common way to start and winning scholarships is all about being different and catching the eyes of the judges’ right from the beginning of your essay.

Use a real life example, describe something you are passionate about, and then lead into the reasons why how winning the scholarship money would help you fulfill your dreams.

Using an interesting “hook” at the start and end of your essay will help the judges remember you and give your scholarship application more reasons to be placed in the possible winners pile.
