When Steve Schwartz said he wanted to interview me for his podcast, the “College Admissions Toolbox,” I was flattered and looked forward to the opportunity to talk about my favorite subject: college visits.
The campus visit is one important part the college selection process, but there are many other elements that contribute. Academics, extracurricular activities, your ideas, your goals, and more combine to create your unique story –the one the admissions committee is going to read when they consider you for admission to their college or university.
If you’re concerned that your grades may not be as stellar as your peers, or you have an idea of where you’d like to end up but have not yet done the work to get there, try a different approach: Be interesting. Think outside the box like Steve Schwartz did and see what you can come up with that will make your story stand out.
Steve has a great story and it’s clear he wowed the admissions committee at Columbia University when he applied. I recommend visiting his “About” page on the College Admissions Toolbox site to learn what he chose to do.
And, while you’re on the site, check out the list of podcast episodes.
