The Overnight Campus Visit Drives Success

Kelly Queijo

Free_ridesI ask almost every person I meet about where they went to college, why they chose that particular school, their major, and so on. Typical answers include:

"I fell in love with the campus when I visited."

"My brother/sister went there."

"I wanted to be close to home."

"I didn't want to be too close to home."

This week, the 20-something man I asked said, "My guidance counselor strongly encouraged me to go here and they were the only school I looked at that let you stay overnight. That meant a lot."

The school was Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, and the young man is now one of three founders of a pretty cool concept in transportation: Florida Free Rides where the only fee you pay is the tip for the driver. He credits his success as an entrepreneur to the internships he had in college.

For accuracy sake, I should add that his inital response to my question about how did he come to be in Clearwater was "school, girls, and weather…and not necessarily in that order."
