You can find a White Christmas year ’round when you discover Bing Crosby at Gonzaga University.
Everybody, join in: “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones I used to know…”
Each December, people everywhere channel Bing Crosby. From radio stations to weather reporters, references to Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” can be heard throughout the land making it easy for all of us to bring a little piece of Bing into our hearts and homes.
But, at Gonzaga University, you can channel Bing any time of year just by visiting campus.
Located in Spokane, Washington, is Gonzaga University, a 120-year-old, top-ranked, western regional university, known nationally for its men’s basketball team. The “Zags” are a fixture year after year in the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournaments. It’s also home to the world’s largest collection of Bing Crosby memorabilia.
Bing Crosby grew up in Spokane and attended Gonzaga University until resigning during his senior year as a law student to pursue a career as a musician.*
The rest, as they say, is history and the history of Bing’s life and career is just what you’ll find when you visit Gonzaga’s campus.
Even the house Bing grew up in is located on campus.
The Crosby House, located at 508 E. Sharp, is open weekdays to the public and admission is free. Also known as “The Alumni House,” it was, until just recently, used as an alumni center. It houses some of Bing’s personal artifacts including his extensive pipe collection.
The Crosby Student Center’s Crosbyana Room, which serves as a museum for Crosby fans and hosts over 2500 visitors annually, houses around 200 items including 22 gold and two plantinum records, movie stills, photographs, record albums, books and sheet music representing just a portion of the entire Crosby Collection.
Additional items can be found in the special collections vault at the Foley Center Library. Here, the Crosby Collection contains approximately 1400 records and albums, 800 audio cassettes, 2000 discs of radio shows, 300 pieces of sheet music, a clipping archive of Bing’s life and career and numerous submissions from adoring fans.
The University’s Visit Office will help you make plans to visit campus. Prospective students are encouraged to submit a visit registration form so that the campus visit can be tailored to meet each student’s interests and needs.
